And theres the factor of having children, and possibly staying out of the job force for some time while raising them. What will close the gap?It depends on how good the economy is, trends in gender balances across all college majors (think more women in geschftlicher umgang and accounting, not just English), parental leave policies and other policies that help women and families, and less segregation of men and women into jobs that pay differently.- - - Meanwhile, a recent survey by TSheets found that attitudes about equal pay are still behind the times1/3 of employers surveyed both women and men admitted to underpaying people based on gender. One in five business own ers surveyed said that men and women did not always deserve equal pay.Less than 2/3 of male business owners surveyed said men and women should always receive equal pay, compared to 72% of female business owners. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

Resume Tricks That Dont Work

Resume Tricks That Dont WorkResume Tricks That Dont Work There is a lot of content out there that will claim to solve your resume woes. The truth is, there is no quick fix for a resume in need, and you should steer clear of anyone who claims otherwise. With an average of 250 applications received per open role, hiring managers have seen countless resumes and have a keen eye for the sneaky secrets applicants may use to try to slide through. If youre thinking of trying one of these resume tricks, you may want to think again. While a strong template can definitely grab attention and help you stand out, be very discerning when it comes to visual elements that pop. This goes for loud colors, graphics, and charts. Unless you are in a field like graphic design, subtlety will be the anthroponym of the game. And remember, elaborate formatting can often render your resume unreadable by applicant tracking systems .It should also be noted that including a headshot on your resume is a practice of the past. Doing so can open the door to many types of discrimination, and employers may reject your CV immediately just to prevent potential accusations.Adding a keyword section to highlight your specific skill set is a great way to ensure that your resume will make it past an ATS it can also make sure that a hiring manager can easily locate the required skills for the role on your CV. A bad idea, however, is adding a keyword section so expansive that it attempts to veil a thin work history. Hiring managers can see through this easily. After all, it doesnt matter how many keywords and proficiencies you include in your resume if you dont have the accomplishments (with evidence) to back them up.This failed resume trick is especially relevant for mid- and senior-level professionals. If your strategy is to wow hiring managers with your full career history, you may want to rethink your approach. One of the fruchtwein common resume mistakes job seekers make is believing that length denotes ability. However, while you may have over 20 years of experience, a hiring manager is not going to be interested in the day-to-day responsibilities of your entry-level role. The appropriate length of your resume is dependent on where you are in your career , but the standard is two pages. Overall, being brief and selective about the experience you include will ensure readability and demonstrate that you know what accomplishments are most important for the role youre applying to.Any personal information aside from your contact information (read email, phone number, LinkedIn URL, and city and state of residence) has no place on a modern resume. Details about interests and hobbies, family life, or colorful jokes will not entertain or delight a hiring manager , nor will these elements provide a better understanding of your personality in a way that is valuable to the hiring process. Venturing into the area of creative writing can be risky and, if at all, should be c ontained to a cover letter. This article was originally published by TopResume . Reprinted with permission.

How to Deal With Unreasonable Demands From Your Boss

How to Deal With Unreasonable Demands From Your BossHow to Deal With Unreasonable Demands From Your Boss645 PM. Im waiting at a restaurant for a colleague. We have dinner plans, and shes uncharacteristically late. Finally, she shows up, frustrated and disappointed.Lately, my anfhrer has been making me stay after hours, even if Im caught up on my work She called me into her office at 530 PM tonight to assign a new project, knowing I had to leave at 6Earlier that day, a longtime client came late for his coaching session. Hed never been late before, having always had control of his schedule at the architectural firm where he worked. That is, until management changed. My new anfhrer assigned a totally unreasonable deadline. He has no idea how long it will take me to deliver the results that he wants. My client was feeling pressured and discouraged by having to perform at a level he couldnt sustain. This is killing my passion to do my best work. Sound familiar? If your boss feels like the reincarnation of the ruthless editor in The Devil Wears Prada- full of unreasonable demands, issuing inhumane deadlines- you might be wonderingWhats the best way to handle this situation? How can I give my boss feedback without sounding like Im just whining? How can I communicate in a way that wont jeopardize my reputation or position? Heres what I suggested to my colleague and to my client, and what Id suggest for you, too1. Avoid Group-Griping SessionsIts tempting to gripe with co-workers about how unreasonable your boss is. And yes, we often feel better after venting and getting some support. But spewing out criticism and negativity is not productive- it doesnt resolve anything.Plus, the absolute last thing you want is word to get back to your boss that youve been complaining around the office. 2. Release Frustration First, Talk LaterIf your boss is making unreasonable requests, you need to have a conversation about it. But before that big conversation, its essential to release yo ur heated, pent-up emotions, so that youre even-keeled and ready for a calm, productive discussion. To release feelings safely and effectively, try thwacking a pillow with a towel thats knotted on one end (once youre back home, of course). Or scream into the pillow (it muffles the sound). Even better, try verbalizing your feelings out loud as you thwack or scream. Im so angry at you for ________.You are so unreasonable and ________. Why do you have to ________?Get all of those feelings out of your system in a safe, private space. That way, when its time for a face-to-face chat with your boss, you wont be holding onto all of that bottled-up negativity. It will be much easier to express yourself with grace.3. Script Your Request in AdvanceThat said, asking your boss to behave differently can still feel scary and stressful. To alleviate some of that anxiety, script out exactly what you plan to say in advance.Heres some language that I suggested to my colleague and to my client Good morn ing managers name,Thank you for taking the time to meet with me today. I know how busy you are, and I hope this wont take long. I want to do my absolute best work for you, and I need your help to make that possible. Heres what Im running intoWhen you describe unreasonable demand, I find it hard to describe how youre not able to meet the demand. This makes me feel share how you feel. This has happened on quite a few occasions list a few of them.I realize that you have high expectations, and I am flattered that you believe I am capable of handling unreasonable demand. I have tried to find a way to how you have tried to meet the unreasonable demand. Im finding that while reasonable demand can be done on schedule and with high quality, unreasonable demand cannot. Again, this is because as above, explain why the unreasonable demand cannot be met, but with a little more detail. As an alternative, Id like to suggest offer alternative plan for meeting your boss request. Thanks for your time, a nd thank you for listening. During our next session, my coaching client had happy news to report That script worked. My boss totally got it. In fact, my boss actually apologized for being so focused on delivering results for the firm that he hadnt assessed the time it would take for me to complete what hed requested. So he revised his request to include a realistic timeframe. Remember Your boss is a human being, just like you- capable of doing extraordinary work, and capable of making misjudgments, as well. But just because your boss makes an unreasonable request (or three) doesnt mean that he or she is an unreasonable person. When you voice your needs clearly and calmly, you can turn even the worst management nightmare in a productive conversation- creating a sane, humane place to do your best work.Photo of boss courtesy of Shutterstock.

Stylist on how savvy businesswomen dress for success

Stylist on how savvy businesswomen dress for successStylist on how savvy businesswomen dress for successThe question How should I dress at work? comes up at every womens conference I address.Sharon Stone is a fashion stylist and personal shopper based in Dallas, Texas. She has a flair for style thats made her a top zupflmmel of celebs like Sarah Jessica Parker and Ellen DeGeneres. I asked her advice.Carol Kinsey Goman There are many different types of workplaces ranging from open creative offices to mora traditional corporate environments. Do you have some general guidelines about appropriate dressing for a professional woman?Sharon Stone While we all know how to dress in our time off and for special occasions, often times appropriate dressing in the workplace can often be a bit of a grey area. The basic guidelines to follow are simple proper fit, classic style and neatness. In general, a proper fit goes a long way towards a professional look. This may mean updating your wardrobe if y ouve changed sizes, as we all do, or if you havent replaced your wardrobe in a while. Dated and faded attire bely your professionalism.Keep it simple. Trends are great and lots of fun to follow, but the workplace is an environment where the understated is more appropriate. In such an environment it is better to have your great performance command the attention, not your wardrobe.Cleanliness and neatness are always in style, and never more so than in a professional environment.Do some research on Pinterest, Instagram and online for business dressing for inspiration. Or if you have the ability to work with a personal shopper, take advantage of that objective opinion. Goman Ive presented my Body Language for Women Who Lead program at several of the most successful firms in Silicon Valley and I am amazed at the array of low-cut necklines I see on women in the audience. What are your thoughts about this?Stone The workplace should be a cleavage-free zone. While there is absolutely a time and a place to embrace a plunging neckline, the workplace is definitely neither of those. It is a distraction and unprofessional.Goman Im all for women dressing in a fashion that makes them feel attractive and confident, but I also advise women to take themselves (and their professional reputation) seriously. When I talk about dress for success for women in a leadership role, I mean dressing in ways that build, not diminish, their credibility. Women in managerial positions who dress in sexy attire (low cut tops and too-short skirts) are viewed as less intelligent. Even other women take them less seriously. Many workplaces have embraced a casual Friday look all week long. Does this make it easier to dress for success?Stone While it is important to be comfortable at work you also want to make koranvers that your look is a polished one. Unless you happen to work in the fitness or sporting goods industry there is absolutely no reason that athleisure should be present in a professional w orkplace. Slacks, pants, skirt or dress are the basic wardrobe from which to choose. When in doubt, a wardrobe consisting of a variety of simple black slacks paired with various blouses, sweaters, jackets, etc. and some simple well-placed jewelry, is the perfect go-to formula.Goman Thank you, Sharon, for these great tips.Let me add that, as with every other piece of nonverbal communication, you need to consider first what success means in a particular context. Appropriate dress is a way of expressing respect for the situation and the people in it. Therefore, your look may change depending on the business circumstances. For example Teresa is a management consultant and a master at dressing for the role. She loves to wear hot pink, turquoise and fire-engine red silk dresses with stiletto heels and lots of bling to work in her New York City office. But the moment she has to meet with a conservative client, or one who is going through difficult times, Teresa transforms herself into a pr im professional whose outfit matches the way she wants to be perceived. (In her words, The success I dress for is that of my client.) One member of her staff recalls meeting Teresa at the headquarters of a nonprofit religious organization where they were to conduct focus groups. The staff member barely recognized her stylish boss. By dressing more like the client, Teresa fit right in. She looked like one of the nuns.I know its superficial, but in a job interview, and indeed any business meeting, you are being evaluated, at least to some degree, by your appearance, clothing and grooming. If you want to be judged as a consummate professional, you need to dress the part.Clothing has an effect on both the wearer and the observer. It has been proven that people are more likely to give money (charitable donations, tips) or information to someone if that person is well dressed. And if you ever watch actors go through their first dress rehearsal of a play, youll see firsthand the amazing tr ansformation that happens when the actors are in costume.Experiment with your appearance. Notice how you feel and how people react to you when you wear certain colors or styles. Then, based on those reactions and your career goals, you can make an informed decision about what dress for success means for you.Carol Kinsey Goman, Ph.D., is an international keynote speaker and leadership presence coach. Heres what they had to sayHigh Demand for TalentWere fortunate that there is a massive skills gap in the technology industry at the moment, meaning there arent enough workers to fill the positions available. At the same time, the number of jobs is increasing, so the combination of a candidate-short market and the speed that companies need these workers on-site means our contract divisions are performing really well. Men are three times more likely to commit financial crimes, but women get the punishment

Men are three times more likely to commit financial crimes, but women get the punishmentMen are three times more likely to commit financial crimes, but women get the punishmentAs the 2008 financial crisis taught us, individual bankers are less likely to pay the price when it comes to wrongdoing. But a new Stigler Center paper found that when individuals do get punished, theyre far more likely to be women. When Harry Fired Sally The Double Standard in Punishing Misconduct found that male financial advisors are three times as likely to engage in misconduct, are twice as likely to be repeat offenders, but women are far more likely to be punished for these crimes and lose their jobs- especially when their bosses are men.Women are less likely to do the crime, more likely to pay the timeWe already know that women are less likely to make as much as men when they work in the financial sector. The Wall Street Journal found that female financial advisers made median earningsof $58,528 compared to their male counterparts$91,814.This new study proves that gender discrimination happens with misconduct too.Looking at data on the estimated 1.2 million people who have registered as financial advisers, the researchersfound thatfemaleadvisers are 50% more likely to be firedfollowing misconduct and 30% less likely to find a new finance job after a misconduct incident. Researchers saidthat it did notlage matter how long the women had been at the firm, how many assets they had managed to attract for their firm, or how well-known they were in their industry what mattered when it came to punishment was whether they were a woman. When you mess up, you need a sponsor at the top to vouch for youThe study found that its the firms, not customers or regulators, who are leading the charge for punishment - which shows us why we all need sponsors at the table who can vouch for us when we fail.Having a network of peers in the office to support you wont help when it comes down to it. Office trib es can be a source of support for those who are in them, but when you are left out of them, they can lead to feelings of ostracism.Firms with equal gender representation of executives disciplined male and female advisers at similar rates. But firms with more males in the top positions were more likely to be unforgiving towards women - even though they let bygones be bygones with men. Firms who had no women at the ownership level were 42% more likely to be fired than men in the saatkorn firm after misconduct. One proposedsolution to this systemic discrimination, the researchers concluded, is to get more women in these top positions Decision makers in organizations can directly affect policies leading to discriminationmembers from the discriminated group, i.e., women, are more likely to recognize discrimination and less likely to support discriminatory practices.Female financial advisers are far less likely to cheat the system, but are being punished more when they do mess up. Meanwhi le, male financial advisors keepgetting more second chances. Its only fair for women tobe getting them too.Fairness in the workplace comes not just on how you treat employees when they succeed, but also how when they fail.

Create a Competitive Edge through Branding, Relationship Building, and Growth

Create a Competitive Edge through Branding, Relationship Building, and Growth Create a Competitive Edge through Branding, Relationship Building, and Growth Like all buzzwords, the word branding has become a bit overused, but the concept remains pivotal in creating a personal image that is memorable and leaves people impressed. But branding gains much of its value in making clear precisely how you are different from your peers and which skills you possess that makes you stand out among your competitors. Any self-marketing plan requires that considerable effort be expended in creating a fleshed-out personal brand. Beyond your outward image, creating networks of contacts is also vital to stay competitive, and the key is to focus more on the quality of your relationships rather than the sheer number of contacts you have collected over time. What you want is a group of people who can directly influence your career in a positive way and those who have the most useful feedback to offer. This may include customers, managers, and employees, among other professional connections. It is crucial to keep open communication channels, and build relationships with those who can impact your career. When you become complacent, or otherwise stagnant in your current station ,you lose a degree of flexibility and creativity that is necessary to continue being successful into the future. Being stagnant means putting too much focus on becoming entrenched in current projects and the other smaller crises that make up your day-to-day life. This affects your ability to remain open to change and accepting new challenges that require a sense of daring and creativity that lead to innovation. This effect dulls competitive advantage because it forces you into the crowd that you are trying to stand above. Continuing to grow means updating your skills, learning new technology, or even shifting your career altogether. The point is to keep evolving and remain open to new opportunities. Building a successful and fulfilling career is entirely reliant on balancing your work priorities with the other aspects of your life. But obtaining a work/life balance is not so much about equally divvying up your time so as to give each portion of your life equal time and energy. It is about finding the best combination of focus and to meet the dynamic demands of your work life and personal life without sacrificing your overall sense of well-being. It is important to pay attention to where you are, where you want to go, and how well you are getting there. Once you understand your goals and what it is that sets you apart from the crowd and what you need to do in order to keep moving forward, you can start allocating your focus, energy, and time to standing out.

Career Insights from a Real Family Law Attorney

Career Insights from a Real Family Law Attorney Career Insights from a Real Family Law Attorney A law attorney  with the Pittsburgh law firm of  Raphael Ramsden Behers, P.C., provides candid insight into the challenging practice of family law. If you’re interested in this area of the law, read on for insights into what it’s like to be a family lawyer! What Is Family Law? Family law is a practice area that encompasses the many legal issues that families may face. These issues include: DivorceSpousal supportChild supportCustodyDivision of assets and liabilities due to divorceAdoptionTermination of parental rightsPaternityDependency and child neglectProtection from abuse What Do You Like About Practicing in the Area of Family Law? In family law, you can be more than a lawyer assessing and advising a client on his or her legal rights. You can help an individual through one of the most stressful experiences in life. It is very rewarding to know youve helped someone through such a difficult time. What Are the Challenges of Practicing Family Law? While rewarding, it can also be quite difficult to go through these events with your clients. The biggest challenge for me is when one or both parties are set on making the process as difficult as possible in a self-defeating attempt to hurt the other party. Describe a Typical Day or Typical Tasks You Perform as a Family Lawyer There are no typical tasks- maybe something else I like and hate about the practice. Each day brings a new issue from one of my clients that must be resolved, from a missed custody exchange to a dispute about how to handle custody over a holiday to one party taking money out of a joint account. New issues arise daily. It can make getting through your to-do list quite challenging. Generally, I spend my day returning phone calls, negotiating small issues, drafting correspondence, preparing pleadings for court, and going to court for hearings and motions. In family law, you spend a fair amount of time in court for hearings ranging from ten minutes to two hours in length. Occasionally you have trials that can last several days. Are Employment Opportunities in the Field of Family Law Growing?   I would say, unfortunately, yes, for two reasons. One, more people are getting divorced. The other reason is that it is difficult to stay in this field, so there is a decent amount of turn over. It takes a certain type of attorney to practice primarily family law. What Skills Are Needed to Practice in the Area of Family Law? Family law attorneys must possess the skills of a litigator and negotiator. Time management skills are a must as well, as the practice of law in the family area is very driven by interruption. It is very helpful to develop  counseling skills,  as you will be dealing with people going through a very emotional time in their lives. A basic understanding of accounting and financial matters are a must to both advise your client and to present financial issues to the court. People skills are important, particularly oral communication. You are constantly in contact with people; whether it be your client, opposing counsel, or court personnel, there is always someone with whom you need to effectively communicate. How Can Someone Break into Family Law? Take courses in  law school  in family law and intern at organizations such as Kids’ Voice and Family Legal Services. Be persistent. If you cant find anything right away, try again. What Are the Latest Trends in Family Law? Collaborative Law is a structured process that provides divorcing parties and parties involved in other family law disputes an alternative to litigation. Although developed over 17 years ago, it has yet to reach all areas of the country. Collaborative Law allows the parties to keep control of their destiny by hiring attorneys committed to a process of including the parties, by use of group meetings, in all negotiations and discussions in a collaborative effort to resolve the matter without going to court. The Collaborative Law attorneys agree not to represent the parties in court should either party decide to litigate their differences. This process has successfully achieved satisfactory results for divorcing parties and is much less stressful for the attorney.

Your social network is a more accurate prediction of your health than Fitbit

Your social network is a more accurate prediction of your health than Fitbit Your social network is a more accurate prediction of your health than Fitbit A fitness tracker is a wrist-worn device that grants users a convenient estimation of the number of steps they took that day, the running distance they achieved, heart rate stats, sleeping patterns, and even their swimming laps. The Fitbit is probably the most prominent activity tracker available to consumers, though the technology is distributed by many brands in a myriad of different forms. The devices have enjoyed a wealth of popularity in the time since their relatively recent inception, but a new study motions another potentially more accurate way to determine our health and fitness. “We were interested in the topology of the social network - what does my position within my social network predict about my health and well-being?” questioned the new study’s lead author Nitesh V. Chawla, who is also a professor of computer science and engineering at Notre Dame.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfact ion, Neuroscience, and more! What your social network says about your health Participants involved in the study were fitted with Fitbits to evaluate their sleeping patterns, amount of daily steps and general activity levels. Individuals were then surveyed about their emotional state, particularly in regards to their views on the concepts of positivity, happiness, and stress. The researchers analyzed their results alongside the information they gathered about the volume of calls and texts received by each participant.  â€œWhat we found was the social network structure provides a significant improvement in predictability of wellness states of an individual over just using the data derived from wearables, like the number of steps or heart rate.”The finds which were published in PLOS ONE, asserts that combining information about one’s social network with information from a fitness tracker improved the researchers ability to predict a respondent’s happiness by 65%, improved their ab ility to predict a respondent’s self-assessed health by 54%, 55% improvement to predicting positive attitude, and 38% improvement to feelings of success. The goal was to alert the public to the one-dimensional nature of activity trackers. There is a wide range of things that contribute and detract from physical well-being, so assessing your own exclusively by the will of digital numbers will provide you with significantly less than the whole picture. “This study asserts that without social network information, we only have an incomplete view of an individual’s wellness state, and to be fully predictive or to be able to derive interventions, it is critical to be aware of the social network structural features as well,” Chawla explained to Mother Nature Network.

6 Career Mistakes to Avoid in 2019

6 Career Mistakes to Avoid in 2019 6 Career Mistakes to Avoid in 2019 The beginning of a new calendar year is a good time to reflect on the previous 12 months and devise a plan to improve things going forward. Whether you experienced a few career mishaps this past year or progressed as expected, it never hurts to strive to do better as a new year kicks off. With that in mind, here are a few critical mistakes you should avoid next year at all costs. It’s not easy to step outside your comfort zone and put yourself in a position where you might fail. On the other hand, if you don’t take   any  risks on the job, you might quickly end up stuck in a rut . The next time a great idea pops into your head, don’t ignore it. Rather, run with it and see where it leads. Even if it doesn’t work out, your boss likely will appreciate your ingenuity. It’s easy enough to coast at work when things are going smoothly. After all, why shake things up when your boss seems pleased with your performance? But if you don’t push yourself to keep learning and growing professionally, you’re likely to stunt your career growth and miss out on key opportunities to get   promoted . So figure out in which areas you’re lacking knowledge and take steps to bridge those gaps, whether it means signing up for courses, attending conferences and seminars or enlisting the help of a   mentor . It’s hard to keep your cool at work when deadlines loom and projects are dumped on you at the last minute. But if you don’t figure out a way to cope with job-related stress, you’re less likely to move forward at your company. As you ease your way into the new year, practice different stress-relief techniques until you find the one that’s most effective for you. At the same time, train your brain to better handle heated situations so that you come off as competent and collected. When it comes to furthering your career, the people you know are often just as important, if not more so, than the things you know. That’s why you can’t afford to neglect your business contacts, even if making time for them is challenging in its own right. Though you may not manage to sit down for lunch with your various associates on a monthly basis, you should, at the very least, reach out to each person in your   network  every few months to check in - especially since you never know when those folks might have a solid job opportunity that’s perfect for you. It’s an unfortunate fact that a large chunk of workers today are   unhappy at their jobs . If you’ve taken steps to make your role better and nothing seems to be doing the trick, don’t resign yourself to another 12 months (or more) of misery. Instead, dust off your   resume , reach out to your contacts and seek out a job that you’ll find more fulfilling. The longer you allow yourself to stay at a job that makes you miserable, the more your performance is likely to suffer, and that’s a good way to hurt your reputation and get yourself fired. Many people shy away from negotiating salary at work because they don’t want to come off as greedy or anger their managers. But you know what they say: If you don’t ask, you (often) don’t get. Furthermore, if you approach that conversation the right way, you can pull it off in a manner that doesn’t damage your relationship with your boss . That means researching salary data so you’re able to present a reasonable number to your manager and going in prepared with a list of reasons you deserve a boost. Either way, don’t avoid that discussion just because it makes you uncomfortable. In doing so, you’ll not only potentially lose out on money that could’ve been yours, but also create a situation where you might start to resent coming to work. With a new year right around the corner, now’s the time to evaluate your on-the-job habits and strive to do better. Steer clear of these blunders in the coming year and with any luck, 2019 will be your most successful one yet. This article was originally published on The Motley Fool . Hybrid Cars Compete for Speed

Hybrid Cars Compete for Speed Hybrid Cars Compete for Speed Hybrid Cars Compete for Speed When many think of a hybrid vehicle, they think about the environmental benefit, not racing. At the New Hampshire Motor Speedway, theyre thinking about winningand learning. The Formula Hybrid competition, now in its second decade, challenges racers to work within the constraints, and see the opportunities, of this alternative vehicle. A race allowing for inlet restrictors, it started using Formula SAE rules but major differences are found in the electrical drive system. That required fairly extensive safety rules for the electrical systems. Elements like maximum voltage insulation, battery safety systems, and more come into play, says Doug Fraser, director of the Formula Hybrid competition. Perhaps the most significant segment of the event is the endurance stage. It has an energy limit and is run on a hilly section of the road course at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Drivers complete 22 laps of one kilometer each and it must be done on 35.5 megajoules, Fraser says. Therepresently are two categories of cars.Eventually organizers wantall hybrids but presently the field is filled by including electrics, he says. Every vehiclestarts with the same amount of energy. In a perfect world, drives would coast across the finish line on an empty fuel tank and Fraser said theyve had teams that pretty much did that. One such memorable moment was when the University of Texas at Austin team ran their systems completely dry, Fraser says. The car was on the track and stopped on the very last lap, needing five minutes to get 100 yards. The crowd, as he recollects, was just fired up by the drama of whether the team could finish. Events have also been scheduled in the past to focus on areas such as maneuverability and acceleration. Reliability, in the end, truly is key, as the majority of teams arrive still trying to finish their cars. For this problem, the organization has project management reports and status updates to try to keep them on track. MSOEs Formula Hybrid team took second place in the world at the Formula Hybrid Competition and first place in the United States. Image: Milwaukee School of Engineering Jockeying for Position One team that excelled and finished second at last years event was the Milwaukee School of Engineering. David Roulo, who is now project manager for the team, says they focused on reliability. We had a cool idea for the transmission but we learned it had to be something for the future, says the mechanical engineering major. We decided to go with a chain drive for last years competition and made it all in house. It was machined by one of our sophomore members in our machine shop. There was a lot of work in finding the right gear reduction ratios. We had a lot of underclassmen and were asking them to do a lot outside of what they were learning. The competition has seen much growth in enthusiasm. Finishing fourth in 2015, we attracted more members and the second place finish has seen so many join, says Roulo. This year we have 15 seniors and 49 underclassmen. We have so many people who want to help. Team members are even working on the future now. You have a chassis were working on that could be a part of things as early as 2018, he says. Another group is working on a future pedal box. We never stop thinking. Roulo, who has been a part of the team since his freshman year and is now a senior, says he takes much more with him than just the thrill of competition. Ive gained great knowledge in how to operate machine shop tools: a lathe, a mill. Its important in that it makes you learn to build your own parts, he says. That started from freshman year. I learned a lot more about electrical systems than I ever thought I would and gained knowledge of how a hybrid works and how to design a chassis for a racing application. It took extra effort to learn these things outside of class and, the great thing is, Im still learning. Eric Butterman is an independent writer. I learned a lot more about electrical systems than I ever thought I would and gained knowledge of how hybrids work and how to design a chassis for a racing application. It took extra effort to learn these things outside of class and, the great thing is, Im still learning.David Roulo, Milwaukee School of Engineering

A guide to surviving the workplace crush

A guide to surviving the workplace crush A guide to surviving the workplace crush The only time I was actually excited to go to my old job was when I knew my work crush was going to be there. It was a retail job at a shoe store - not a typical 9-5 - so I didn’t see him everyday. But when we did work the same shifts…oh boy.My mood was totally different on those days. I was excited to go to work and even happy to be at the store. I had a pep (or, um, maybe a sexy strut?) in my step. There was something to think about other than how boring and miserable work was. Finally, I had a reason to go to work.  Being in a better mood on the job also made me put in extra effort. It was a win win: I got to enjoy flirting throughout my shift while also killing it on sales.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Workplace crushes are normalI’m hardly the only person to experience the workplace crush phenomenon. Fifty-eight percent of  recent survey participants  reported engaging in a workplace romance in some capacity. A psychological study aptly titled,  Workplace Romances: ‘Going to Work Is Amazing and Really Fun  found that participants involved in a workplace romance “expressed their pleasure in going to work” and were also motivated to work harder.Despite the fun factor and possible productivity boosting effects of a workplace crush, this type of relationship is still considered pretty scandalous. Of the 58% of aforementioned survey participants, 64% kept it “mostly” secret due to the risky nature of the relationship. Company policies vary when it comes to a workplace romance. Even if such relationships are allowed, employees may fear gossip or judgement from peers and higher-ups.Navigating your workplace crushWhether your crush is brand new or  turning into something serious, here are our five tips for surviving the workplace crush.1. Know your company’s policySome companies are more lax than others with policies surrounding empl oyees dating. HR and management might be okay with it in certain situations - like if you’re in totally different departments. However, if there’s a power dynamic - if your boss is your crush, or you’re the boss with a crush on a direct report - HR probably won’t be cool with it.Your organization might require that you tell your direct managers and HR if you  actually start dating your crush, or you might face consequences. I recommend whipping out that employee handbook you probably ignored during onboarding to get some concrete answers.2. Decide if you actually want to pursue your crushYou are in control of your actions. As you may remember from elementary school days, it  is  possible to have a crush without acting on it. You can bask in the good feelings and butterflies you get from your work crush without having to act on it physically or to even disclose how you feel.Talkspace therapist Rachel O’Neill, Ph.D. says, “Dating a workplace crush can carry some serious ramifications (like loss of employment). It might be helpful to consider whether pursuing the crush is worth the potential fallout. If you do decide to pursue something, you might want to consider how to be proactive in an effort to minimize potential consequences.” Do you think this is just a case of casual sexual attraction, or could this be the real deal? Know your motives - and your crush’s motives - before going all in.3. Think aheadWhile your dating style outside of work may be more carpe diem, you have to be a little more mindful with workplace crushes. Put some thought in and plan ahead. You might want to ask yourself: What if you hook up and it’s weird? Will you be able to do your work without feeling painfully awkward? If you end up dating for a while and then break up, will you be able to remain professional in the workplace after the split? If you and your colleague-crush end up getting serious, will you be able to stay in your current jobs? Would you be okay switching departments if HR required it? It’s not necessarily fun to think about these things, but it’s important to weigh the pros and cons to decide how you’d handle various possible outcomes.4. Create boundariesIf you want to play it safe, create boundaries. For example, if you feel like your  physical chemistry is too intense  to be left alone together in a room, don’t allow that to happen.O’Neill says “I recommend working to put into place some boundaries to minimize the contact you’re having with the person. For example, if you routinely enjoy lunch breaks with this person, try including another co-worker or using lunchtime to catch up on some reading.” Having a buffer can help when you’re trying to resist temptations. If you’re already in too deep and actively pursuing a relationship with your crush, create boundaries surrounding flirting and physical contact in the office.5. Keep it professionalUnfortunately, the main purpose of work is getting work done, not flirting. Keeping it professional in the workplace can differ depending on the workplace - not oversharing details of the crush/relationship with your coworkers, not engaging in PDA, and making sure you aren’t too distracted to actually get your work done. Again, reference your company’s policies for more rules regarding appropriate behavior. Staying professional will ensure that you won’t face consequences. Honestly, life is short. We spend most of our time on this planet working, so we might as well have a little bit of fun. Having a crush make us feel  good  - and in this case, makes us dread work less. Is that  really  such a bad thing? Whether you’re pursuing something more with your crush or simply just letting yourself feel all the feelings, you can still revel in the pleasure of crushing. This article originally appeared on Talkspace.

4 ways to get your work done when youre drowning in meetings

4 ways to get your work done when you're drowning in meetings 4 ways to get your work done when you're drowning in meetings Being slammed with meetings - often back-to-back ones - can be exhausting, and can send your productivity into a nosedive as you struggle to figure out how you’re still going to get that mountain of work done. Here’s what to do to get time on your side.Know when to decline that Google Calendar meeting inviteEmphasizing that you’re busy can be an effective method.Although some meetings are crucial to attend, there are times when they aren’t the most important thing you have on your plate - and, in fact, they could prevent you from getting the work done that your boss is expecting. When it comes to picking and choosing priorities, the best advice is to be transparent, and honest, since little white lies won’t last long in an office full of people on the same team.If you’re genuinely swamped, and get a last-minute meeting invite, try letting your coworker know the truth.“Be honest and say, ‘Unfortunately, I’m devoting every moment I have to [some task] due in two day s. Please keep me posted if there’s any way I can be of help later this week,’Freelance writer and editor Sarah McCord, who covers careers, writes  in The Muse.Set aside 2-4 hours where no one can pull you away from your workMarta Turek, Associate Director of Digital Marketing Programs at digital marketing agency ROI DNA,   says the solution is to schedule fewer meetings that matter more - and know your own patterns well enough to know what time of day you do your best work, so you don’t schedule meetings in the middle of that time.“Create blocks of time in your calendar dedicated to your work, and indicate in the title that this time is blocked off for specific, focused tasks. Indicate which project you’ll be working on and request that no meetings are booked in that time,” she writes in Moz.Turek, whose lecture,”Too Busy to Do Good Work”  at MozCon 2015 laid out  â€œ21 daily habits to master for increased productivity,” encourages people to “block out 2â€"4 ho urs every day in your calendar for uninterrupted work.”Early risers might be better off doing their best, uninterrupted, work in the mornings, while night owls might do best to power through tasks towards the end of the day.Schedule all your meetings on the same dayThis may or may not work for you, depending on your level of seniority.“Stop taking meetings throughout the week: Monday at 2 p.m., Wednesday at 11 a.m., Friday at 4 p.m., etc. Instead, set aside a single day for meetings,”  Jason Shah, founder and CEO of collaboration platform Do, writes  in Forbes.“Most leaders find mid-week is desirable, as it breaks up their work week. Monday is a good time to plan and prepare, and Friday is a good time to review and reflect,” Shah continues. ”Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays are ideal days to engage in meetings, depending on what works best for you. When you only take meetings once per week, you’ll have longer stretches of uninterrupted time to focus on higher-value t asks.”Hold meetings standing up - they might become shorterCarson Tate, founder of management consulting firm Working Simply, writes about how a senior executive client at a big company had days that were so packed, her female employees began “following her into the restroom, file folders in hand, to get answers to their many questions” in The New York Times. Can you imagine? Not only was this executive’s personal space encroached upon, it was also a major signal that she had so much going on that her direct reports had trouble getting to her.Tate later includes tips for managing meetings- including this trick.“For in-person meetings, consider requiring everyone to stand up. This is very effective, because leg fatigue soon sets in and everyone has an incentive to keep the meeting short,” Tate writes.
