Since the massive downsizing wave that swept the 1990’s, management has begun to suffer the same pains as the blue collar workers. Everyone is overworked and unable to focus entirely on any one thing. Professional development in the corporation has transformed into personal development. In other words, management doesn’t have time to help you develop your career. Sure, they’ll take a few minutes to help you jot down your goals but it won’t go much further than that. Employees don’t get the kind of attention nowadays that helps develop careers. The best way to promote yourself is to promote your brand. Personal brand value should be managed by focusing on the creation of your manager equity. Too many times employees focus on creating value for themselves. They engage in activities that they think will increase their value to the organization. Maybe they work longer hours per week or learn new skills to increase their productivity. These types of performance are valuable in that they give your manager less to worry about. However, they don’t do a great deal to increase your equity. Technology has already ushered in an improvement in productivity and unfortunately longer work hours. Everyone is getting better at these so you want necessarily be distancing yourself from the competition by improving them. Building manager equity will require a change in mindset. Your actions should not seek to make you look better but make the managers look better. Here are a few questions you should consider in developing the manager equity mindset: • Do your decisions on what to work on take into consideration what you need or what your manager needs? • Do your efforts focus on key managers and building their loyalty and trust in your abilities? • Do you focus on resolving some of their problems? • Do you identify the skills that managers seem to appreciate most? Do you focus on improving them to be your equity? • Do you change your efforts to cater to each manager in hopes of maximizing their satisfaction? Managing your brand equity not only requires an ability to modify it but to also measure it. Gauging how others value you and your contributions is always difficult since most managers will avoid be brutally honest about what they think you contribute to the company. This can be avoided by using your friends and trusted colleagues to probe your managers for what they really think. Use their feedback to adjust your strategy. For example, if your assessment team identifies that managers are disappointed in your ability to lead projects, take a look at your history and understand why they feel that way. Then, improve it. It’s important to remember that brand equity is subjective. Not only will different managers value your brand differently, the same efforts that improve your equity with one manager may have little effect on another. Your efforts can increase or decrease it. Therefore, it becomes critical to understand what drives each manager’s equity. Awareness is one essential element in how they develop equity and the easiest to manage. Lastly, don’t try to influence their perception of you alone. The most reliable information managers use to learn about you is the advice from others. Tooting your own horn is good but endorsements from others can carry a lot more weight and serves to validate your abilities. Luckily, the same team you use to learn how well you are developing your equity can also sing your praises and improve your brand equity at the same time.

Women Are Better Bosses Than Men - Here Is The Evidence In 1953, Gallup first asked Americans, “If you were taking a new job and had your choice of a boss, would you prefer to work for a man or a woman?” At that time, 66% of Americans said they preferred a male boss. Five percent said they preferred a female boss, and 25% volunteered that it made no difference to them. A little more than six decades later, Gallup asked Americans the same question and found that they are still more likely to say they would prefer a male boss (33%) to a female boss (20%) in a new job, although 46% say it doesn’t make a difference to them. While women are more likely than men to say they would prefer a female boss, they are still more likely to say they would prefer a male boss overall.  Despite these sentiments, Gallup discovered that employees who work for a female manager in the U.S. are actually more engaged, on average, than those who work for a male manager. Evidence that points to women are better bosses: However, only one in three (33%) working Americans say they currently have a female boss. While there are many highly successful female and male managers, female managers do have a slight advantage when it comes to engagement. And it’s an advantage leaders should consider when deciding whom to name manager. Leaders should also know that female managers themselves tend to be more engaged than male managers. Gallup finds that 41% of female managers are engaged at work, compared with 35% of male managers. In fact, female managers of every working-age generation are more engaged than their male counterparts, regardless of whether they have children in their household. These findings have profound implications for the workplace. If female managers, on average, are more engaged than male managers, it stands to reason that they are likely to contribute more to their organization’s current and future success. Office envy - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog As Ive mentioned before, our HQ here in Copenhagen is in a fantastic place called La Oficina. This is a shared office space for small businesses but a very different one. The metaphor for the place is not really an office, its a caf?. When you step inside, the first thing you see is the bar and the grand piano. In fact, there are no desks, office chairs, cubicles or bulletin boards anywhere. You go in, you pick a table like you would at any caf? and you work, have your meeting, have coffee or whatever. In short, its a beautiful and brilliant place and the caf? setting makes it really easy to meet and learn from all the other amazingly cool people who come here. But a place in England has just upped the ante. When I saw this, I became instantly green with envy: Yes, that is a slide going down three floors. I have not tried it but it looks fast. Client Case Study Megan Dowd - When I Grow Up Um, do you know that Ive coached hundreds of women since I started offering dream career guidance in 2008? And that these women are freakin rock stars, leaving soul-sucking jobs and traveling the world and launching creative, grown-up businesses and simply doing work that fits their lifestyle goals? Well ya do now and youll hear their stories firsthand in my  Client Case Studies series! Um, I am #obsessed with  Megan Dowd. A  Boost Your Dream Business  grad, I knew her long before she became a client. Just like she doesnt quite remember how she crossed *my* path, I cant point to how I found *her*, either but when I did, I opened those newsletters and stalked  her Instagram like it was my job. Im so thrilled when it actually became just that my job! I cant wait til you read her real, grounded, vulnerable and transparent answers to my questions below. What a treat for us both! Why did you decide to work with me? I *think* I found you through a podcast interview, I honestly dont remember, but from that moment on it was a yes, I will work with her someday kinda love affair. For one, we have incredibly similar backgrounds (theater, ambition, career shifts), and I KNEW when our paths crossed, magic was going to happen. I just knew. And then you put out the call for clients and some major life transitions were about to go down and I knew in my gut, now was the time for some extra love and support and kick in the pants. What were you doing work-wise when we started working together and what are you doing now? OH THE TRANSITIONS. When we started, work-wise I was FINALLY hitting my stride after 3 years of life-shit hitting the fan (long story and not for here) but the bottom line was: I was ready to dig in and dig in deep. I had slowly been whittling my way into a niche and JUST when we started working together I had an epiphany. I realized that the services I had BEEN offering were awesome but not right at all for me. With your guidance I unpacked years of ideas for services and packages that were AWESOME services and packages! They just werent services and packages I wanted to offer. Copy, design, branding, branding strategy, social media copy, social media storytelling, one-off consulting YOU NAME IT, NOW Im down to two offers that flow into each other so well and Im mapping out HOW I want to grow this specific niche rather than jumping around to all the services. What was your biggest takeaway from our work together? REIN IT IN. Seriously I now routinely ask myself, Would Michelle tell me to go deeper or wider? because typically Ill try to do both. To be give the breadth and depth all in one massive blog post or workbook. Now I wish I could say NO MORE but lets be honest, its really like IM WORKING ON IT and I feel confident that I can continue to navigate this territory. Think of someone who is currently in the shoes you wore when we first started working together. What advice do you have for her? Keep showing up. Even when shit hits the fan. Even when youre like this is a terrible time for me to be in coaching. Even when the gremlins and vampire voices sneak in to tell you that this isnt for you and you dont belong in your business. Maybe its NOT right and those voices cut close to the bone, but they are NEVER right in their motivations and reasoning. Keep working and trust that Michelle with hold the space for you that you need. Is there anything thats been a game-changer for you when it comes to your business that you can share? Wed love a good resource or a mindset/productivity tip! Asking myself if Im giving away too much was something I KNEW I needed to do but something I never trusted myself to answer. Its not a great tip per se, because its most CERTAINLY a process: work every day to cultivate trust in yourself.
